Creating Your Account
Set up your Cipher account in minutes using a secure seed phrase. No email or phone number required.
Important: Backup Your Seed Phrase
Your seed phrase is the ONLY way to recover your account. If you lose it, you lose access to your messages AND your crypto. Write it down on paper and store it securely. Never share it with anyone.
Step 1: Download Cipher
Cipher is available for iOS, Android, and desktop platforms. Download the app from your device's app store or visit our website.
Step 2: Generate Your Seed Phrase
When you open Cipher for the first time, you'll be prompted to create a new account. Tap "Create New Account" and Cipher will generate a unique 12-word seed phrase for you.
Example seed phrase (DO NOT USE THIS):
Step 3: Write Down Your Seed Phrase
This is the most critical step. Your seed phrase is the master key to your account and wallet. Follow these best practices:
DO
- • Write it on paper (multiple copies)
- • Store copies in different secure locations
- • Consider a metal backup for fire/water resistance
- • Tell a trusted person where to find it
DON'T
- • Screenshot it on your phone
- • Store it in cloud services
- • Email it to yourself
- • Share it with anyone claiming to be support
Step 4: Verify Your Seed Phrase
Cipher will ask you to verify a few words from your seed phrase to ensure you've written it down correctly. This is a safety check—if you can't verify the words, you haven't properly backed up your account.
Step 5: Set Up Your Profile
Optionally, you can:
- Add a display name that contacts will see
- Set a profile picture (stored locally, not on servers)
- Register an on-chain username like "alice.cipher" for easy discovery
None of these are required—you can remain completely anonymous if you prefer.
Step 6: Enable Biometric Security (Recommended)
For additional security, enable Face ID, Touch ID, or fingerprint authentication. This adds a layer of protection if someone gains physical access to your device.
You're Ready!
That's it! Your Cipher account is now set up. Your cryptographic identity has been generated, and your wallet is ready to use. Next, learn about how your keys work and why they're important.
